April 2021, Letter from the President

As I’m writing this month’s letter, I can hear different bird calls - finches, mourning doves, cardinals, and even a blue jay - and the buds are becoming more apparent on the trees. Spring is finally on its way! As you’re reading this, we’re already in the throes of spring, and hopefully spirits are up as the neighborhood turns greener. After a full year of quarantining, we’re all welcoming the warmth and sun of the new season a bit more.

As the weather warms up, I know we’re all going to be wanting to spend more time outdoors. If you’re taking advantage of Patterson Park, and love the time spent there, don’t forget about their capital campaign to renovate the white house. You can help the BHA’s effort to raise money for the kitchen renovation by making a donation tagged with “Capital Campaign - BHA” in the description. And, as we were reminded last month by the Friends of Patterson Park, please keep wearing your mask while in the park.

April also brings us Earth Day and, traditionally, the Mayor’s Spring Clean Up - both are great opportunities to get outside and help ensure our neighborhood is as green and friendly as we strive to be. We’ll be hosting a spring clean up, with a designated spot to pick up any tools you may need to borrow. And if you’re like me and have gotten really into gardening and plants this past year, now is the time to be preparing your outdoor spaces for all sorts of wonderful spring and summer flora. Additionally, we’re planning for a virtual Garden Tour in June, so if you think you’d like your space to be featured, please reach out or consider joining one of our planning meetings.

I know that many of our survey respondents have said that they’re interested in volunteering to help with events, as opposed to sitting on a specific committee. There are plenty of short-term volunteer opportunities this spring and summer between Streetscape and the Garden Tour, so please get in touch with our committee leads! And since I mentioned the survey, if you haven’t taken it yet, please reconsider. We still have it available and on the website at butchershill.org/survey - I think we’ve been getting some really wonderful feedback, and we’d love to hear from you.

I really hope you’re all doing well. How are your friends and neighbors doing? Does anyone need help figuring out how to get an appointment for vaccination? How about needing help with the spring clean up? Please check in on those around you, and remember to stay masked while out.

Be well,

Bri McNamara
