December 2009
Things have been eerily quiet lately with nary a single crisis so nothing to report there. Dee and I managed to get away for 11 days and are especially happy to report that even though I had email over there, I could have done without it. As expected, we had a good neighborhood cleanup, the house tour went successfully as expected, and even the weather was unusually mild.
Since I'm known as somewhat of a curmudgeon, I do want to complain about the attendance at the November "school meeting." We had three excellent presentations from principals and heard about many exciting things on the horizon. Those of us who were there left the meeting with a better understanding of why we need to support our local schools. Back to my complaint. Our monthly meetings are much more than hearing about schools or digital cameras. They're about showing up because you are a part of Butchers Hill, meeting your neighbors, and having the opportunity to give feedback. Look beyond the immediate agenda and be an active member!
Those of you who know me will not be surprised that I am not riding off quietly into the sunset come January. I've been asked to be the Executive Director of the Southeast Presidents' Council. This is an organization comprised of the presidents of all 24 named neighborhoods in SE Baltimore. As you can guess, we have a very loud voice and the Mayor, the City Council President, and others have already reached out to us. Currently we are focusing on the Live Entertainment bill. In November we met

Dealing with Leaves
Leaves are loaded with phosphorus. If they are not managed properly when they fall from trees in autumn, they can end up in surface runoff. When that runoff flows into waterways, the phosphorus in the leaves can cause algal blooms, lower the level of dissolved oxygen in the water, and kill fish and other aquatic organisms.
If you are not composting or using them for mulch, bag leaves and put out with regular trash collection, not with recycling. At present the city will take up to 10 bags (clear plastic so leaves may be identified or brown paper, labeled: yard waste). The Streetscape Committee will provide brown paper bags, left over from the cleanup, at the Holiday Pot Luck on December 6th and at the January General Meeting, January 6, 2010, until they are gone.
The most important thing to remember is to keep leaves out of waterways. Do not rake them into the roadways where they can be carried into rivers and streams.
(This especially relates to the streets where we do not have city cleaning. Bagging leaves that fall into the streets, sidewalks, alleys and road gutters will certainly help keep many leaves from reaching the harbor.)

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD
Continued from Pg. 1
with Patricia Jessamy and the SE Precinct to discuss nuisance crimes, juvenile gangs, and the negative effect they have on our quality of life. For the future, I envision the Southeast Presidents’ Council addressing issues within the City that make our lives unnecessarily difficult - those bothersome, bureaucratic, goings on that an accountable, citizen friendly government would think twice about. We're still formulating our agenda and I'm certainly open to all ideas.
I look forward to seeing you all at the Potluck Dinner!
