December 2008              Image 1
I’m sure there’s no need to remind you that our annual Holiday Pot Luck dinner is December 7th. It’s our once a year opportunity to sample some fabulous food and catch up with neighbors. I want to emphasize that this event is for EVERYONE who lives in Butchers Hill.  This is not a members only event.  All are welcome and encouraged to attend.  In fact, I ask that each of you talk someone else into coming to the dinner. Butchers Hill is a wonderful neighborhood in which to live, and the December pot luck is one of the many reasons.
I can't think of a good segue, so I'll just jump right into the next subject - TRASH! Let me begin by expressing my personal opinion that the Baltimore City Department of Sanitation is one of the best run city agencies we have. They give us reliable pickups twice a week, they instituted a very successful mixed recycling program, they bend over backwards to help us with our neighborhood cleanups, they supply us with periodic dumpsters, and they react quickly to our requests and inquiries. They are also very proactive, so when they told me that one of their main goals is better sanitation to reduce Baltimore's rat population, my first reaction was "how can we help?"
Here's how..... Be aware of the regulations and follow them (within the practicalities of living in Butchers Hill). The Code (paraphrased) states that all trash must be placed in covered receptacles and be easily accessible to the collector (generally the sidewalk). However, because of the way most of Butchers Hill homes are configured, about half of us would have to drag garbage cans the length of the house or down a couple of flights of stairs twice a week.

House Tour – Dee Lundelius – Thanks for the very successful House Tour this year.  We had over 250 people on the tour and believe we made over $5,000.  A special thanks to the people who had their houses on the tour.  It could never be as successful as it is without the generosity of those people.

City zoning law and the red line
If you have an interest in either of these things now is the time to give your input.   Baltimore City is in the process of rewriting its zoning law.  There have been 9 small working groups that reported on 11/17 on different aspects of the zoning code.  The minutes from these small groups are available on line and if you want to add a thought or complaint you just need to go to www.transformbaltimore.net .   You can send an email or use the interactive program which they are in the process of modifying.
The redline plan has become controversial in some of the communities through which it is proposed to run. There are 12 alternatives presented in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement ( DEIS) .  The comment period on the DEIS is open until January 5, 2009.  You can look at the alternatives and their analysis and give your comments on line at www.baltimoreredline.com. Click on Public Hearings,  then public hearings brochure.  There is a very nice summary of the options on pages 3-5 as well as a chart on page 8 which is an evaluation of alternatives.

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

Continued from Page 1
Since this is clearly not practical, the city inspectors have agreed to focus enforcement of this code on those who feed the rat population by placing their trash out in bags the night before collection and not the morning of.
Use a covered can if you have easy or outside access to the street. If not, you may put out trash bags, but ONLY THE MORNING OF THE PICKUP. If you put out bags the night before, you will be fined, to say nothing of contributing to the rat problem. If you happen to put out trash on a non-collection day like election or Columbus day, get it off the street. Again, you will be fined if you don't. Let's all pitch in to do our part.
                                                                      -Barry Glassman

With these three choices you should have no problem finding the correct audience.

crime prevention committee:
Two neighbors and I went to district court recently because of a car break in they witnessed a few months ago. I also wrote a community impact letter which will be presented to the judge at the time of sentencing.  This type of action most often assures stricter sentencing.  While it is an inconvenience, if want to get the best we can from our court system we need to do more of this. While our neighborhood has much less crime than many around us, we need to report all crime and follow up as best we can.  Our committee is here to help.  Officer Joe Tracy, our new community services officer, attended our last Crime Prevention Meeting and he reminded us that part of the reason we have less crime is many of us are vigilant and take the extra steps to follow up.  He also reminded us that during the holiday season we need to be extra vigilant. Car and house break ins are generally up all over the district during this time.  We also learned that Officer Tracy coaches one of the Banner football teams and lives in a neighborhood near us.
Carolyn Boitnott

reminders:
Place bagged leaves out on your SECOND weekly trash collection day – the city will collect unlimited bagged leaves on that second collection day.  Use clear plastic bags or paper bags that are clearly marked as yard waste.
Keep the street gutters around your home clear of leaves and debris -- clogged gutters do not allow proper storm water run-off and contribute to flooding.  In cold temperatures - this can mean ice on your street!
