November 2009
When I moved to Butchers Hill in 1997 there was not a kid in sight. In fact, the joke was “Look, Tom and Mary put their house up for sale. Little Jane must be having her second birthday so they’re moving to the County.” Now you go to the Park and it’s filled with kids whose parents have stayed in Butchers Hill. There are a lot factors involved, but I don’t think anybody will argue the fact that schools are what made the biggest difference.
Our November meeting will focus on those schools. We will hear about what they are offering, the progress they are making, and how we as a community can be more involved.
In addition to Commodore John Rodgers Elementary School and the Patterson Park Charter School we have also invited a representative from the new Montessori school. Even if you don’t have children I hope you will attend to find out more about how these schools are strengthening our neighborhood.
For years we have been supporting the Black Knights in Banner Neighborhoods Youth Football League. We will be joined by one of their coaches who will tell us about the goals of the program and how it builds character for the youth. You might want to even bring a check book for a donation that will go towards uniforms and equipment.
The Ralph J Young Recreation Center has a new director, Odell Burton. He will be sharing a number of ideas for new programs and would like to get some feedback from us.
Finally, the nominating committee will be presenting a slate of officers for 2010. Be sure to come to find out who will be leading us down the primrose path next year. I know I can’t wait to find out.

IT TAKES MORE THAN COLD, RAINY WEATHER TO GET
BUTCHERS HILL DOWN!!!
Despite the weather people came and homeowners seemed happy. A really lucky stroke was that the rain stopped at noon. Needless to say this was not the most successful house tour, Butchers Hill has ever had. But, for the gracious souls who opened their homes despite the wet shoeprints, and the hearty people who came out despite no guarantee that the skies would open again, the day went pretty well.
Weather not permitting, Dee and Barry still held a great worker appreciation party afterward, in addition to being mainstay house tour figures. (Barry sold all the ads in the Booklet and Dee is co-chair of the tour.) Lynn Writsel did a fabulous solo job on publicity – maybe the best ever. Susan Scherz, once again, personally handled the whole brochure composition. We had so much help from so many neighbors that it’s best to stop here because we can’t list them all. (The last page of the booklet tries to name them.)
If you were one of the homeowners, thank you. If you were a house sitter, thank you. If you are one of those unlisted, thank you. If you came on the tour, thank you. We didn’t break any records on the proceeds, but we didn’t lose either, and many people enjoyed themselves and BUTCHERS HILL.
Sue Noonan
A huge thank you to Howard Ehrenfeld! Howie presented a fabulous “workshop” on using your digital camera at the October Artist Night, Butchers Hill General Meeting. His vast experience as both a professional photographer and professor at MICA made him the perfect person to give us direction and tips for getting the perfect photographs.

NOVEMBER AT SOUTHEAST ANCHOR LIBRARY

- Friends of the Southeast Anchor Library, in Highlandtown, have given us all a new reason to stop by and enjoy our wonderful new library. Come to the next meeting of the Friends group, November 12, 6:30 PM. Help make a difference as they continue to enhance what is already a wonderful facility. Contact Sandy: 410-558-0149 or sjs2201@verizon.net if you want a ride to the meeting or more information.
AMAZING NEIGHBORS THANK YOU!
In the rain, of the coldest October day in a century, your neighbors came out and used over 250 large brown bags to clean our neighborhood. In fact, only 3 of 28 block locations didn’t use the bags put out by the Streetscape Committee. Southeast Department of Public Works picked up all the bagged trash.
Those walking our streets, the next day, as part of the Butchers Hill House Tour enjoyed weed and trash free gutters and sidewalks – which will be easier to keep clean all winter, and reflect very well on us all. If you didn’t get out with us this time, spring will bring another chance and we can always use Block Captains to help keep us informed about trash issues.
DO NOT PUT YOUR TRASH OUT IN BAGS!
It must be put out in a covered receptacle. You may put it out the night before pick up if it has a tight fitting lid. Also, the new law says receptacles must be removed from the sidewalk no later than 6:00am the day after the scheduled pickup.
TRASH TIPS:
(1) Recycle more which means less trash.
(2) Buy a smaller metal can with tight fitting lid and put out the empty can first and then put your bags in the can. In the evening carry the empty can back inside.
(3) Save yourself some serious money by complying - fines can go to $500, late fees add up and unpaid balances represent a lien against your property, and could cause your home to up for tax sale.

Dealing with Leaves
Leaves are loaded with phosphorus. If they are not managed properly when they fall from trees in autumn, they can end up in surface runoff. When that runoff flows into waterways, the phosphorus in the leaves can cause algae blooms, lower the level of dissolved oxygen in the water, and kill fish and other aquatic organisms.
If you don’t have a good place to compost leaves, bag them for collection by your local municipal composting operation.
The most important thing to remember is to keep leaves out of waterways. That means not raking them into the road where they can be carried into rivers and streams through your storm drain system.
(This especially relates to the streets where we do not have city cleaning. Bagging the leaves that fall into the streets, sidewalks, road gutters in front of your house and alleys will certainly help keep some leaves from reaching the harbor.)
new education leaders:
Welcome new education leaders to our neighborhood. At Commodore John Rodgers School , 100 N Chester, we have a new principal, Mrs. Davage-Jones and new Assistant Principal, Mr. Lewis. At the Ralph J Young Recreation Center (behind the school) we have a new director, Odell Burton. The school and Recreation Center hope residents will take advantage of the programs and feel a part of both institutions.
At Ralph J. Young they have an After School program where the children get assistance with their homework and MSA prep; they provide healthy snacks, arts & crafts, and field trips. Special programs include: wrestling basketball, modeling, 4H Club, flag football, Men’s Unlimited basketball, and roller skating. The Recreation Center is starting a mentoring program focusing on young men and women, and coming soon a GED program; they also hope to have a program especially for the seniors in our community.
Hours are 12 PM-8 PM Monday – Friday. Mr. Burton would like to start a recreation/neighborhood council, if interested please let him know 410-396-9197, he is eager to open the center to community meetings and gatherings. The Recreation Center is also available for rentals. |
