October 2006
BHA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Well, Fall has arrived with its cooler temperatures and mar-velous colors.
We enter the last quarter of the year with our annual artist night; this replaces our meeting for this month. This year's event will be organized by our own Butchers Hill artist Bill Duffy, who has organized a multi-genre presentation of Baltimore artists. We look forward to seeing everyone at this fun meeting.
Also coming up this month on the 15th is our House Tour. This event is our biggest event of the year and always shows off our neighborhood well.
This year Sue Noonan promises 12 unique homes that show the diversity of our neighborhood.
Last month was our Flea Market-the most successful one we have had despite the poor morning weather. I would like to thank all of the volunteers at the BHA booths, the Friends of Patterson, the vendors and the many neighborhood associations that participated in this great event.
On a more serious note crime seems to be on the rise in the past month.
We need to all be diligent and follow Carolyn's note from last month, repeated here: Police have asked that residents call 410-666-DRUG to report repeated suspected drug activity, but always call 911 if you want immediate police response. There has been an increase in car theft and car and home break-ins. No matter how minor the damage, please call 311 to report, and ask for a police report number. The police can patrol better if they know where and when these events are occurring. Report suspicious people to 911 and let's have as much street presence as possible-sit out on your steps, say hello to all who pass.
-Richard Hackett.
The Butchers Hill 2006
HOUSE TOUR
Sunday, October 15th, noon to 5
Tickets $15; $12 in advance
Starting Point: The "White House" in Patterson Park
(Patterson Park Avenue at East Lombard St.)
Pick up advance tickets at the Butchers Hill meeting this Wednesday. Or anytime before the 15th, you can buy your ticket with the $3 discount at the White House in Patterson Park, or Long and Foster (701 South Broadway), or Coldwell Banker (808 South Broadway) in Fells Point.
Just be sure you have the 15th on your calendar and that you have told friends and family, because you're going to hate yourself if you miss it.
For us locals, it's a great source of decorating and remodeling ideas and a wonderful opportunity to meet your neighbors. Nine of the twelve people have never put their house on the tour before. You're going to see some unusual floor plans, different concepts and meet a diverse group of residents-some in the neighborhood over 20 years, others scarcely a year.
How can you resist the opportunity!
Did you forget to volunteer to house-sit? Yes, it's late but not too
late: call 410-522-6773 or email Dee Lundelius or
Sue Noonan.
-Sue Noonan.
Butchers Hill is in the spotlight on Sunday, October 15 with our annual house tour. Please help us out by paying special attention to your block on Saturday the 14th. Weeds, trash and other eyesores send such a negative message. We can all show our gratitude to those opening their homes by sprucing up the surrounding area. It will be appreciated. (Note that there is a community dumpster scheduled for the Thursday before the House Tour; see below.)
-Sue.

The minutes of the September 6th BHA General Meeting, prepared by BHA recording secretary Beth Needham, can be found at http://www.butchershill.org/association/minutes.shtml.
Flea Market Update/ Events Committee Report: The Flea market was a huge success, due to the hard work of numerous people. While we experienced a little rain during the day, most people maintained an upbeat attitude and the vendors felt it was a profitable day. We had 112 registered vendors and our top line sales were $3000.
- Thanks to Sandy Sales who was going on vacation September 16, but dedicated numerous hours and historical data prior to the event and even stayed until 9 AM to make sure the market was set up and in full swing.
- Thanks to Rick Gilmour who decided to retire from this event, except that he also dedicated numerous hours and information before the event, and while he wouldn't show up at 6 AM, was there by 7 AM. And he can create the best maps, which is how we were able to site all of the vendors.
- Thanks to Bev Wall who took over 300 phone calls and as many emails to get those 112 vendors informed.
- Thank you to all of the volunteers the day of the event who cheerfully got the vendors in place, directed traffic, manned the Butchers Hill flea market booth, the food booth and the clean up.
--Co-chairs: Tori Simms, Ray Hofmann and Bill Miltenburger.
Streetscape Committee Report: Work on the mural continues to progress well with the detail work of Jerome, Betsy, and Bo completed, and the remainder of the mural coming together nicely. Thanks to Murals of Baltimore and our mural artist Michael Kirby for the excellent work on this exciting project. Thanks also to the House Tour Committee for choosing to feature the mural on this year's House Tour poster.
A great thanks to councilman Jim Kraft, Parks and People Foundation, and Banner Neighborhoods for their work and commitments to help us with this season's tree plantings, pending approval of the final list of approved tree sites from the city's Department of Forestry. We hope to hear more in the coming weeks regarding final site selection and funding.
It is with sadness that I must announce that I will be stepping down as chair of the Streetscape Committee in November to permit time to prepare for my upcoming deployment to Afghanistan in early 2007, where I will join a US Army unit as a public health physician for a one-year tour. It has been a great pleasure being able to contribute a small part of my time to give back to the community that I love so much. Anyone interested in helping take over the duties of the Streetscape Committee in my absence should
contact me at (240) 401-3628.
--Remington Nevin.

Awards will be presented at our December meeting.

The Friends of Patterson Park and the Creative Alliance present the GREAT HALLOWEEN LANTERN PARADE, Saturday, October 28 (rain date October 29).
The Parade begins at the Pulaski Monument, Linwood & Eastern, at 7 PM.
Baltimore's beloved Halloween tradition is a magical combination of candlelight, music, and spectacle, coordinated by Nana Projects' Molly Ross and brought to life by thousands of community participants. The Parade is breathtaking, snaking through Patterson Park, and culminating in the World Premiere of Ross' "Magic Lantern Show"-an animated story based on Poe's The Raven, projected stories tall, performed live and accompanied by Boister playing Anne Watts' original score. Be in it! See the Workshops/Kids & Community section of the Creative Alliance website
(www.creativealliance.org) for Free Lantern Making Workshops.
Monday, October 9th, is a City Holiday: No Blue-Bag Pick-up.
Please do not put your recycling out.
COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD
The BLACK KNIGHTS need Your Help! Coach Mike Ferreira is soliciting donations to fund this year's Butchers Hill Black Knights youth football team. The team serves 11-13 year olds who live within the boundaries of Washington St., Orleans St., Haven St., and Eastern Ave., including kids living right here in Butchers Hill. Donations are used to fund league operations costs, the end of year banquet (trophies, pictures, etc.), and individual jerseys that each player keeps at the end of the year. Our jerseys have the Butchers Hill logo on them to acknowledge your sponsorship. A donation of $25 essentially buys a jersey for a kid who otherwise couldn't afford one. But every dollar counts and we'll take whatever you can contribute. Please consider donating to this very worthy cause. Your donations are tax deductible and you will get a letter back from Banner Neighborhoods acknowledging your donation. Please mail donations to: Banner Neighborhoods, c/o Butchers Hill Black Knights, 2412 East Fairmount Ave., Baltimore, MD 21224.

On Halloween night, between 4 and 6, our neighborhood trick-or-treaters will collect candy or other treats and prizes by visiting "treat stations"-tables set up in our schoolyard where volunteers, students, parents and business members of our community will hand out treats and provide information on goods and services that may be of interest to families in the Southeast community.
