PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

It is October, and, as always, that means it is time for the annual "Artists and Fun" BHA General Meeting. This year the theme is photographers. Our own Howard Ehrenfeld has assembled a group of photographers who all live in Butchers Hill or have a connection to the area. The invited photographers are: Middleton Evans, Laura Vernon-Russell, Dean Alexander, Dan Magus, Anna Santana, and Howard Ehrenfeld. Following the presentations, we will be able to socialize with the artists over snacks and beverages. Great fun!

After a long overdue review of the Butchers Hill Association by-laws, the Executive Committee has come up with a proposal for a few minor changes. A list of these proposed changes will be available at the October meeting. They will then be presented for discussion and vote at the November meeting.

--Dave Dyer.

The 26th Annual Butchers Hill
H O U S E   T O U R
Sunday, October 16th, noon to 5
Tickets $15; $12 in advance

Starting Point: The "White House" in Patterson Park
(Patterson Park Avenue at East Lombard St.)

Invite your friends! Mark your calendar! The 26th Annual Butchers Hill House Tour will take place on Sunday, October 16th. Out of the 12 houses on this year's tour, only one of the homes and owners has been on the tour before. There is a huge variety of traditional and modern decors. Some creative decorative ideas and objects will fascinate you. They range from modern to Victorian, from cozy to elegant, from minimalist to ornate, and from two-story narrow to four-level expansive. A few homes reflect the international travel and background of the owners. You'll also see a variety of approaches to the parking problem.

This is a "don't miss" opportunity for an inside-look at the places you drive and walk by on a daily basis. It's an insight into the versatility of city living. Tickets will be on sale for $12 at the October general meeting. ($15 the day of the tour.) The Patterson Park Pagoda will also be open during the House Tour.

Poster Artist: Larcia Premo.

Clean up -- Please find time to clean your sidewalks and sweep your gutters before the House Tour weekend: let's put on a good face for our guests!

NEIGHBORHOOD HISTORY, THE PHANTOM, KATRINA AIDE AND A GREAT TEACHER

These are all tied up into one: Pete Klaus. He is the only teacher still at School 27 who was there when the current building opened in 1971. He had just started teaching Physical Education the year before. At that time, and for some years to come, he divided his time between three or four schools. He remembers hauling sports equipment, extra sport shoes and T-shirts (donated by local stores for children who needed them) in his car from school to school. In those days, elementary school children got 30 to 45 minutes of organized physical education every 2 weeks.

Pete taught over 1000 students a year in those days. Now he is full time at School 27. One of his first memories of starting at School 27 was walking with his students from a school at Bond near Fleet in Fells Point (they were being redistricted to 27) to the new School 27 to plant shrubbery along Washington Street as a way of helping them feel connected.

Pete is a multi-talented person who helps kids with reading, plays the guitar, and is now in charge of 27's "Maryland Kids Care" campaign-raising money for the Katrina victims. All the students and staff are generously contributing, and Pete even secured four Oriole autographed bats that were auctioned at Nacho Mamas and Mamas on the Half Shell (the owner is one of 27's partners and one of Pete's recruits).

One of the most fascinating things about Pete is that he is a very active member of the Friends of the Phantom fan club. This love of the Phantom goes back to when he was 4 years old. He attributes the comic strip to his learning to read. The jungle setting, love of history, the strip's advocacy of animal rights, and other good causes has maintained his interest as well as the interest of half a billion readers throughout the world (the Phantom is published in 32 languages.) If you watch the strip carefully you might even see Pete's distinctive face as one of the characters (usually a bad guy). However, the kids at School 27 see a very warm and caring good guy.

Carolyn Boitnott.

Trash is everybody's problem. Please pick up around your own property and don't contribute to "public" trash. Pickup days for regular trash are Tuesdays and Fridays except Holidays. Remember that owners can be cited for trash near their property, no matter whose trash it is.

Recycle-Please! Although the rules may be strange and the schedule incomprehensible, recycling helps keep the Chesapeake clean and extends life of the landfills. Recycle days are noted in the calendar in each Butchers Hill Newsletter. Generally, Blue Bags (glass, plastics, and cans) are collected the second and fourth Mondays and Brown Bags (paper, cardboard, phone books, and shredded paper) are collected the second and fourth Fridays of each month. Recyclables in blue bags or brown bags will not be collected with regular trash.

All trash should be put in secure containers or sturdy bags. Don't put them out until the morning of trash pickup day. Trash attracts rats (both the four-legged and two-legged kind) and scavenger birds, so the less time it is out, the better. Yard waste can be put out with regular trash, but should be bagged or bundled securely.

Save special trash items for special days: . Bulk trash pickups must be individually arranged at least three business days in advance of the scheduled pickup (second Wednesday each month). Call 311 to schedule a pickup, and get a confirmation number when you call. . Hazardous waste is collected twice a year at special locations around the city-watch the Newsletter. . Butchers Hill arranges dumpsters each month for items too large for regular trash. . City residents may take trash directly to any one of five sanitary landfills from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday. Call 410 396 8450 for information.

Holidays are always a problem. Please watch the Newsletter for announcements of days on which trash will not be collected. The next pickup after a holiday is the next regular trash pickup, so please don't leave your trash at the curb after you inadvertently put it out on a city holiday-take it back in until the next pickup day!
