August 2009
There are lots of things that make Butchers Hill the great neighborhood that it is - the architecture, location, our parks, but most of all YOU. Our August meeting will focus on  introducing you to some neighbors you might not have met and give you some idea of the structure of our organization and what makes us tick.
Prez PicWe’ll begin with brief reports by each committee chair about what they do and in some cases what they would like to do if they had more volunteers. You will also have an opportunity to ask each chair questions and make suggestions on how they can broaden their activities.
We will also tell you how easy it is to organize a progressive dinner and to form a book club. These are both wonderful ways to meet neighbors and broaden your horizons. (Not such a big secret - Butchers Hill has some incredible chefs and many avid readers).
I’ll be asking for volunteers of course. Specifically I’ll be looking for someone to coordinate our greening program for next year by working with the City Forestry Department on a tree plan. I’d also like to have a web team to keep butchershill.org current, add a few new pages, and update some of the older pages.
We’ll be looking for some new faces this January for the Executive Committee. A nominating committee will be elected at the September meeting. New faces and new ideas are another important element of the long term success of our organization. Please think about serving. I’ll be glad to answer any questions about what’s involved.
And the bylaw saga continues... We’ll have one last vote regarding the late change to what constitutes a quorum for the Executive Committee. The bylaws may be found at butchershill.org.

Biggest Complaints :

  • PET OWNERS ALLOWING DOGS TO URINATE ON TRASH CONTAINERS AND/OR PUTTING POOP BAGGIES IN OTHER PEOPLE'S CANS (inconsiderate & illegal).  These cans are brought back through the home until next pickup.
  • Lids not being put back on cans after collection.

2-FER HELPFUL HINT: Neighbors who are home during the day, if they are so inclined, could do a great service by replacing lids and place cans by steps - preventing an open can inviting public use and problems exiting parked cars.  This once-a-week service would be much appreciated.
HOTTEST HINT: Share a container, and the responsibility that goes with it.  Neighbors who do not generate 32 gallons of garbage a week are taking turns placing a shared container out, seeing the lid is secure and taking it in until next pick-up.
STINKY TRASH TIP: Leave in frig until night before pickup, wrap in plastic bags/cling wrap/zip lock bags.
BEST BONUS: Once a week recycling!  So much of today's trash is recyclable and NO SPECIAL CONTAINER REQUIRED – USING PAPER BAGS OR BOXES are acceptable leaving nothing to bring back in after pickup.  Huge leaf collection bags are available at Home Depot - 5 for $1.88.
Future problems - wet, snowy, icy cans coming through a home.  TRICK: use a designated towel or put the whole empty can into a contractor sized plastic bag, so it is clean coming through the house.

Meeting: 7:00 PM St. Andrew’s Church Hall, Chester & Lombard.  Contact Barry Glassman, bglassma@verizon.net
AGENDA:     “A Look Behind the Scenes”  BH Committees and what they are focusing on.

“BH POTLUCK COOKOUT A HUGE SUCCESS”
The Butchers Hill Potluck has always been a success, but this year we out did ourselves!  The weather was absolutely perfect for an evening of getting to know one another.  There were those who have been in the community for a long time, new to the neighborhood people, and those who have moved but keep being drawn back.  I guess they really miss us!  George (Larson’s corner store, S. Collington and Lombard) played the keyboard and the accordion throughout the event, while Larry (Bondoggies Caterers) kept the hamburgers, hotdogs, smoked ribs, and smoked brisket (if you were lucky enough to get some!) coming on.  I noticed some foot action going on to the beat of the music back in the corner!   A good time was had by all as shown by these photos taken by a photographer whose name I didn’t catch (please include your name when you drop off such great photos so I can give you credit! )

Thanks to all who attended the pot luck picnic. A perfect evening of food, laughter, music, children and neighbors.  I personally appreciated the opportunity to hear about some of your concerns and to meet some new neighbors. And of course kudos to our ace crew who made it happen.
No fireworks for this month’s meeting, but hopefully we’ll have a good attendance from those of you who are curious about what goes on “behind the scenes”.

flea market committee:  needs volunteers
The Friends of Patterson Park and the Butchers Hill Association sponsor a gift of time, space and good will to all non-profits and the communities surrounding Patterson Park in the form of the Spring and Fall Flea Markets.  It is a truly family event, designed to offer "recycling" in a form that is win-win-win for sellers, buyers and Goodwill Industries.  It takes a lot of folks to pull it off.  If we are to continue to have two Flea Markets a year we need more active participation at the organizational (committee) level as well as:

  • Someone to contact the community and non profit associations in the neighborhood throughout the year.
  • Someone to ask the Hispanic store owners along part of Eastern Avenue and/or Broadway if they would allow a poster in their window and distribute.
  • Someone with a truck or van to either bring Larry's grill to the park at 9 am and/or take it back to his garage in the neighborhood at 4 pm.
  • Volunteers on the day of the event to: monitor vehicles arriving in the park (7-9 am), survey participants and the public during the event, work 2 hours at either the food or flea market booth.

Join in the secret: volunteering is a way that likeminded people meet and have fun while doing good work for the community.  If you think you can assist at any level, please contact: Tori Simms tori.simms@kimball.com or come to the next Flea Market Committee meeting.

Volunteer or Donate to the Southeast Anchor Library
3601 Eastern Ave., currently serving 900 kids in the Summer Reading Program, plus teens and adults!
Public funding does not support Pratt literacy efforts, such as the Summer Learning Program, which costs $60 per child to provide.  Won’t you consider sponsoring a child or teen?  Please include “Summer Learning Program” on your check or letter.  Our branch also needs volunteers to help shelve all those wonderful books the community is using! Hours are flexible and a one-hour training is included. Please call Cindy Kleback at 410-396-1580 for more information. (An application and background check will be included in the process.)  The Butchers Hill Association is a community sponsor of the Friends of the Southeast Anchor Library and encourages all to become an active member today!  Contact Jackie Watts at jwatts2@mac.com
