There is no July General Meeting this month. Instead, join us for our annual Pot Luck on Wednesday, July 11th, in Halcott Square (S. Duncan Street, between Pratt and Lombard).. We'll supply the beer and sodas, paper plates, and grilled hot dogs and hamburgers. Bring an appetizer, salad, side dish or dessert to share with your neighbors. Special family recipes, gourmet delicacies or any other food in large quantities appreciated. We'd like to have the goods on the tables and ready to serve by 6:30. We'll begin setting up tables around 5:30, so bring food then or earlier if you can. Take your chances if you arrive later than 7. If you live near the park, please carry over any extra lawn chairs or card tables for extra seating. Want to contribute some red, white & blue decorations? Questions? NO GENERAL MEETING THIS MONTH

Join us for the picnic in Halcott Square (Duncan Street Park) on Wednesday, July 11th, from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

Minutes of the May 2nd General Meeting.

  • Barry Glassman announced that Butchers Hill CDC acquired 2028 Baltimore Street from the city at the June 5th Celebration of the 2000 Baltimore St. The BHCDC has a plan for the 14 boarded up HABC houses in BH. Good news for Castle Street Park - $100,000 are now available for the work there.
  • Lt. Beling from the Fire Marshall's office gave us several pointers on fire safety, storage of inflammable materials, pet rescue, ladders, free smoke detectors, and fire extinguisher recommendations. He left with several useful goodies for our protection.
  • State Delegate Pete Hammen spoke on health care, housing, the senior drug purchase plan, nursing homes, and water quality problems. He promised to return this summer to lead a meeting on the troublesome traffic patterns in BH.

HALCOTT SQUARE IS 25 YEARS OLD

Halcott Square, the area many call Duncan Street Park, is 25 years old. After a series of fires destroyed seven row houses on the site, it became a dumping ground and eyesore until neighbors Charles and Mary Halcott spearheaded an effort to make it a park. The raised brick planters, brick paving, wood benches and tables and the original landscaping were completed in 1976-1977. Although Charles Halcott died before the park was completed, Halcott Square, named in his memory, has become an important part of our neighborhood.

Original landscaping consisted of trees, shrubs, and groundcover, with coneflowers and an old-fashioned daylily or two as the only spots of color. From the original plan, we still enjoy the October Glory maple and one of three tiny-leafed Amur maples in the front planter. Hawthorns on the south border of the park, Hicks upright yews at the west border, and spreading English yews in the north planter also survive from 1976. A red pine tree bent by snows into a bonsai-like shape is early, if not original.

Halcott Square really began to flower in the early 1990's when Toni Francfort discovered two gardens in west Baltimore that were being given away. With the help of Steve Young's "green machine" pickup, Toni and Steve moved many flowering plants, primarily modern daylilies, to Halcott Square. Other plants were contributed by neighbors, some in memory of loved ones.

The City's Horticulture Department about this time began to contribute both plants and design ideas. The topiary pyracanthas were developed and daffodils and irises were planted for spring color. A tap for watering the plants was also installed. Lately, Diane Snyder has taken an active role in the design and maintenance of the garden. This year she and Steve planted two types of azalea in the north bed.

Over the years, the park has had some problems. Ivy has been thinned to control rats, evergreens have been stolen at Christmas time, and shrubs have provided human hiding places. Perhaps the biggest loss, however, was a bronze commemoration plaque. It read: This Space is Dedicated to the Memory of Charles Halcott, Sr. by the Members and Seniors of the Committee for Citizens Rights - 1977.
-Rick Gilmour.

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD
The Work of LESLIE SCHWING, July 9 through August 6 at Simon's Pub & Eatery.

Simon's Pub will be exhibiting works by artist LESLIE SCHWING from July 9 - August 6 with an opening reception to be held on July 10th, Tuesday evening, from 6-9 pm. Leslie has worked in her studio at Artists' Housing in Washington Hill for the last 15 years. She is well known for her mystical pencil cityscapes and dramatic pastels. This show, "Views from the Hill," focuses on familiar scenes for us, but often from quite unfamiliar perspectives. This show will also highlight new works from a developing series entitled "Urban Compost," inspired by the demolition of Baltimore's Church Home Hospital.

More of Leslie's work can be seen at the Craig Flinner Gallery on Charles Street, at Artscape, City Hall Exhibition (this summer) and on her web page http://amberlady.com/gallery. Please mark your calendars and join us for the opening reception. Simon's is located at 2031 E. Fairmount Avenue in Butcher's Hill.

Artists Wanted: If you're interested in showing your art at Simon's Pub, please contact Carole Poppleton at 410/276-0333 or email her at: carpoppleton@prodigy.net.

PLEASE - I NEED A GOOD HOME!
Male dog, shepherd-husky mix. I was abandoned to the streets, but fortunately, I was rescued a few weeks ago. My rescuer has provided me with needed shots, and has fed me well. I'm gentle, housebroken, and get along well with other dogs and children, and I like being walked on a leash. I don't know why someone didn't want me? I'm a good boy-I hope someone will give me a good home. I'm available for an interview.
