May 2009
If you’re like me, counting the days until summer is an annual ritual: cheering for the Oryuls, gewin’ downy ocean, visitin’ de Quariryum, and socializing with your friends neck-store. Then, BawlmerGasLecric spoils it all with a monthly bill. Well friends, it’s time to fight back! Come to our May meeting and we’ll show you how to lower your electrical bills in ways that don’t cost very much and are surprisingly easy. As a person who spent most of his life on Wall Street, I always look for a big return on investments and that’s what we have for you.
We’ll begin with a presentation from People’s Council. They’ll explain to us how to save money by switching from BG&E to another supplier and how to decrease your carbon footprint at the same time. We’ll also do a show and tell on compact fluorescent lights, thermal leak detectors, tankless hot water heaters. reflective roof paints, window sealing, and more.
If that isn’t enough excitement for you, we’ll also vote on the revised bylaws (available on butchershill.org) and our 2009 budget.
I have a new nickname; “Mr Mud In My Face.” Last month I expressed doubt that the Parking Authority would bend their rules and procedures to work with us in a practical manner on permit parking. Was I wrong! After I expressed my frustration to them on various issues, they suddenly agreed on all three issues. They agreed to do a parking study without us petitioning. If we eventually petition for residential permit parking they also agreed to a random verification of signatures and to treat the neighborhood as a single entity, not block by block. We will hold off on requesting the study until angle parking has been installed on Fairmount & Chester Streets. Hopefully we’ll have real numbers to work with so we can make an informed decision on permit parking.

Meeting: 7:00 PM St. Andrew’s Church Hall, Chester & Lombard. Contact Barry Glassman, bglassma@verizon.net
AGENDA: Affordable energy savings, voting on bylaws and the 2009 budget
Butchers Hill Association General Meeting Notes 04/01/2009
Streetscape – Rob Steinberg – The postcard everyone received from the City of Baltimore regarding the new trash policies is just educational at this point. The bill is still in committees in city council. The city is starting to educate the citizens through postcards, pieces on the news, etc. At this time – bags are not allowed. There has been an unwritten agreement that the city would look-the-other-way. However, recently there have been some over-zealous city employees who have been citing people that have put trash out in bags.
Guest Speakers were: Rebecca Gershenson Smith – Downtown Baltimore Family Alliance (www.dbfam.org)
Tekla Ayers – Center Director of Patterson Park Audubon Center
Tim Almaguer – Executive Director of Friends of Patterson Park
Other Business – By-laws - Vote will be taken next month. There is another revision and the new version must be posted for 30 days before the vote. The revisions are posted on the website. (http://www.butchershill.org/)

LATE BREAKING NEWS FROM BHA PRESIDENT:
We just met with CHAP and they have decided not to pursue making all of Butchers Hill a CHAP district. The voting was a virtual tie and they like to have a majority before proceeding. Thanks to all of you who took the time to respond.
We recently received word that the Gateway at Washington Hill project (Chapel NDP) is on indefinite hold due to construction financing difficulties. The property owners are actively pursuing other potential partners.

items illegally dumped that volunteers hauled to the truck, 150 city bags and many regular trash bags of debris were filled and disposed of - ALL IN A 3 HOUR TIME PERIOD. Butchers Hill is the best - because the people are the best. Everyone pitches in and does what they can when they can - and the result can't be beat! Look around and appreciate where you live. Now, with consistent care it will continue to be the best. If you didn't get a notice, your block may need a block captain. School 27 News.
Thanks to those neighbors who shared their work experience at School 27's first Career Day for our 8th graders. And thanks to others who have helped begin the school’s recycling program. Some students will be receiving community service credits for helping collect school papers for recycling. For the rest of this school year we will be putting out the school’s recycled paper during our neighborhood bimonthly collection. Next year we hope to have weekly collections at the school. All classrooms are participating. The school has had several wonderful presentations from our city's office of recycling.
