April 2009

The April meeting will offer many ideas for enjoyable activities close to our immediate neighborhood - as offered by the Friends of Patterson Park, the Audubon Society, the Downtown Baltimore Family Alliance and Fells Point Main Street.

After our guest speakers we will have an open discussion of the proposed bylaw changes. A new, highlighted version has been posted on our web site www.butchershill.org. The only substantive change since the last posting is having the election of the Nominating Committee earlier in the year. We will vote on all changes at the May General Meeting.

The Executive Committee would like to thank Don Renaud for stepping into the recently vacated position of Member at Large.

Reverse angle parking is scheduled to be implemented on Chester and Fairmount Streets as soon as Chester is repaved this spring. The Department of Transportation is unable to give us an exact day as of this writing.

Residential Permit Parking (RPP): We will be asking the Parking Authority:

  1. to do an informational study of how many non-residents are parking in Butchers Hill without doing another petition,
  2. for advance approval of implementation on an “all” (entire neighborhood) or “nothing” (none of the neighborhood) basis,
  3. random verification of signatures (as they only verify during the day). Once we have real numbers to present for discussion, we will be able to schedule a vote by the membership.
I am not optimistic the Parking Authority will agree to these terms.

President BHA

Writers LIVE! Readings and Book Signings:
Laurie R. King, The Language of Bees
Monday, May 4, 6:30 p.m.
Southeast Anchor Library

In 1994, Laurie King's The Beekeeper's Apprentice introduced young Mary Russell to Sherlock Holmes, and a cult was born. The ninth book in the Rus-sell/Holmes series, The Language of Bees, returns the duo to Sussex Downs where they met and to the beekeeping passion that became Holmes' avocation upon his retirement from Baker Street. Award-winning author Laurie King stops in Baltimore on her "Fifteen Weeks of Bees" tour (bees@laurierking.com), which includes the celebration of the 150th birthday of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle on May 22. Presented in partner-ship with Mystery Loves Company.

SUE NOONAN:

My daughter has published her first novel, "One September Morning" under her own name, Rosalind Noonan. She will be visiting Baltimore in April for book signings, readings, etc. I am having a tea for her on Tuesday, April 14 from 2pm - 4 pm. All are invited.

2029 E. Pratt St. (410) 522-6773.

STREETSCAPE COMMITTEE REPORT:

Congratulations to the 2000 block Baltimore Street for beginning the process of creating more plantings and generally sprucing up the fronts.

Note to all residents/owners: the city is going to step up citations for weeds in sidewalks. If you pull them when they first appear they will not cause the sidewalk to heave and crack, or gather trash. Sidewalk replacement is costly for the city and owners.

Trash collection changes are coming. In preparation: become a recycler every 2nd & 4th Friday, and begin to rethink use of plastic bags for regular trash. How could you use a can with a tight fitting lid for your regular trash collection. If you carefully recycle, how much other trash do you really generate? These are among the questions the Streetscape Committee needs feedback about, so as to better represent you. Email Rob Steinberg, or call: (410) 558-0149.

FLEA MARKET COMMITTEE ALSO NEEDS:

Besides the volunteers needed on Saturday, May 9th (see article on page 1) volunteers are needed on Friday May 8th to set up the site in Patterson Park and to put handouts together for the vendors. We also need volunteers to deliver posters beginning Saturday, April 25th.

Remember: the Butchers Hill Association has a booth and it is a great way to clean your basement or attic. Drop off is from 6am to 9am, on May 9th at Patterson Park and Lombard. Items left at the end of the day go to Goodwill.

INITIATIVES! What is it? Come find out. Join us for some friendly chatter and share a glass of wine on Monday, April 6th at 2 S. Collington Ave., 7:30pm. (BYOB) Discussion of ways we can increase involvement and engage more of our neighbors. Interested in reaching out? Please join us (or be in touch). Kathy (410) 327-2447 or Patty.
