March 2009
Did you ever look out on your yard and wish you had a comfortable place to relax and enjoy a beautiful day or go out and pick some flowers or hear the sound of running water? For our March meeting we’ll show you many of those possibilities and more, no matter what size your yard is. Joining us will be Chris Venuti, our neighbor and owner of Envisions Landscape Design. He will talk about hardscapes (patios, walkways, and walls) and softscapes (plants, beds and materials). He will bring materials that he uses in his design and illustrations of some of his urban gardens. Best of all, he’ll emphasize projects that you can do yourself. Be sure to join us and learn how you too can have (or improve upon) that peaceful oasis you’ve always wanted.
As I’ve said in earlier letters, a very unfortunate lack of communication with the Baltimore City Parking Authority has necessitated the petition process for Residential Permit Parking (RPP) to be started from scratch. Last August we voted on four issues. Three of the votes were overwhelming majorities, but the vote to have RPP five days was very close. Having the perspective of time and some angle parking instituted, I’d like to have another vote on if we want to ask for five or seven days. I’ll give a quick recap at the meeting and answer questions about RPP.
I’m sorry to announce that Ian Hines recently resigned from the Executive Committee due to new job responsibilities. Pursuant to the bylaws, the Executive Committee will appoint someone to fill this position. If you are interested or would like to recommend somebody, please contact me. We are always looking for new faces and fresh ideas.
Our April meeting will have two important votes - a major revision of the bylaws and a vote on the 2009 budget. I urge all of you to visit our website (butchershill.org) to review both documents.
Finally, I’m writing while on vacation 2,000 miles away. Fortunately I have Internet access and have been able to follow the Butchers Hill Facebook. My only comment is that anything that gets people more involved with their neighborhood is a good thing. I really hope more folks will participate in Butchers Hill activities and issues to better our neighborhood.
Tot ziens!

YES, YOU CAN BE FINED FOR NOT CLEANING UP AFTER YOUR PET. But more importantly, it is a health issue. It attracts rats, smells and can be accidentally brought into ones home. Recognize that your pet may excrete on the way home and be prepared. Have a tightly lidded container at your address that can be emptied into the regular trash. Be the caring person your pet thinks you are and help keep our neighborhood a great place to live.
311 ONLINE
Did you know that besides calling 311 One Call Center to request City services, you can also use the Baltimore City website and 311 Online? Choose 311 Online under Citizen Services on the City’s home page, then follow the simple directions to enter your request. While you are there, you can check on the status of a previously submitted request by clicking on the link to the 311 Service Request Status Lookup page. Just enter your tracking number in the space provided, click the search button, and they will display the details of that request, including the status, status date and outcome.
FYI: MAY DUMPSTER – first of 2009
Tuesday, May 12th, unit block of North Collington will be our first community dumpster of 2009. Due to budget cuts neighborhood associations will be limited to four community dumpster dates per year. We have additional trash removal service when the Butchers Hill Streetscape Committee signs up to participate in the Mayor's Spring and Fall City-wide Cleanups.
Saturday, April 18th will be the Spring Cleanup. The dumpster must be watched the entire time it is in the neighborhood so illegal dumping does not occur, causing Butchers Hill to lose the privilege of its use.
Why not have it delivered on a weekend, Monday or Friday? The Department of Public Works sends the Butchers Hill Association a schedule that has Mondays and Fridays blocked out as possible delivery days. Saturday delivery would require
volunteers to monitor the dumpster continuously through Saturday night, all of Sunday and Sunday night to make sure there is no illegal dumping and that when it is full no additional trash is put in causing it to crest over the top or overflow. In the past we have had the experience of weekend dump-sters not only filled with illegal items, but over flowing and trash left all around the dumpster, including the street and sidewalk. Not only does this make it so no one wants the dumpster placed by their house, but the City then must send an additional trash truck and crew to pick up all the trash, pull trash out of the dumpster until it does not stick above the rim and then the dumpster driver, who had to wait while the crew came and did this, can take the dumpster. This additional mess and expense can cause a community to be removed from the dumpster eligible list.
