HAPPY NEW YEAR 2007!

February 2007

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Here we are in February. I hope everyone is holding to their New Years resolutions. Please think of that community association commitment you made to yourself. The best place to start is with your membership dues. If the treasury knows how much money we can count on, we will be able to set our budgets next month for the year. So send your dues to the White House or drop them at 2110 E. Baltimore.

Our events this year will be set up a little bit differently. Instead of an events committee meeting every month we will have each event committee chaired by a member of the executive committee. They will then work hand in hand with a coordinator. At this point no coordinator has stepped forward for the Garden Tour. I hope to have someone in place a.s.a.p. This needed to start yesterday.

This month we are looking forward to getting an update on the Chapel NDP development that borders us to the west. We will also be looking for any input from the general membership of potential objectives for this year.

-Richard Hackett.

Dear Butchers Hill residents,

On behalf of Banner Neighborhoods, I want to express my gratitude for your financial support of our Community Football League. As a result of $1500 in donations from Butchers Hill residents, we were able to add the first annual "Friendship Bowl" to our schedule! Last December 2nd, we consolidated our three teams into one and defeated the Bronx (NYC) Buckeyes 20-6 at Utz Field in Patterson Park.

More importantly, our youth demonstrated sportsmanship, respect and goodwill towards their counterparts. Our coaches and youth, ages 10-13 were thrilled to have the opportunity to host and compete against a team from New York. They also established relationships with the Buckeyes in a pre-game luncheon, a football skill-building clinic, and a field trip to the Reginald Lewis African-American History Museum. Banner is grateful for its partnership with the Butchers Hill Association as well as the support of its residents, and especially for the fundraising efforts of resident-Coach Mike Ferreira. Coach Steve Donaldson, a former Butchers Hill resident, was also instrumental in making this an unforgettable experience for our youth, many of whom live in precarious circumstances.

Effective February 5th, 2007, I will become the Director of Community Planning, Organizing and Leadership Development for Baltimore City & Baltimore County for Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS). I have enjoyed my time with Banner and have learned a ton about the challenges that Baltimore residents face. Thank you for being such helpful, hopeful and enthusiastic teachers! Banner's dynamic Community Organizer, Lillian Drumgold, will continue to work with Butchers Hill. If you have any community-building ideas, however crazy or half-formed they may seem, talk to Lillian. Your idea may be eligible for one of our neighborhood grants! Our application is easy-just 1 page! E-mail or call: 410-276-8373.

Look out for our new website, www.bannerneighborhoods.org. We expect it to be ready by the end of February, chock full of exciting pictures that highlight our multitude of community-building programs!

Thanks again for supporting Banner, a non-profit organization dedicated to building a sense of community in southeast Baltimore.

-Brian Greenan.

BOOK FAIR COMING!

TEN CENTS! THREE FOR A QUARTER! YES! Children's gently-used paperbacks and hardbacks are being cleared at give-away prices in preparation for the Scholastic Book Fair. Each Friday in February, in the lobby of School #27, 100 N. Chester Street, children's books will be on sale (until they are gone). New books will be available at the Scholastic Book Fair beginning Tuesday, February 27th through March 9th. We are looking for volunteers to help set-up the new Scholastic books when they arrive on Monday, February 26th. Please call Sandy, 410-558-0149 if you can help.

The new school librarian would appreciate any volunteers to help shelve books, do paperwork or assist children in book selection during their class visits. Also, the computer lab needs knowledgeable volunteers to trouble-shoot, and donations of "mice"-since quite a few have lost their "balls" :)! We also need anyone who can assist the librarian in learning to access some specific sites on the web. Contact Ms. Patti at jp27@comcast.net, or call Sandy, 410-558-0149. Good citizens read. Help motivate beginning readers to practice and become good readers. HELP A LIBRARIAN!

Crime Prevention and Block Representative summary report for 2006

While we have had some spikes in crime over the past year, all in all our neighborhood continues to improve and is considered relatively safe. This is, in part, thanks to many aware residents who report suspicious activity and our good relations with our local police districts. The following is a summary of our activities in 2006: Evan Helfrich continues to coordinate a walk-around Citizens on Patrol twice a month checking out problem spots, vacant property, etc. We have written 9 community impact letters to the courts concerning people who have been arrested in our neighborhood, and 5 letters to property owners where there has been illegal activity. We have helped coordinate 3 clean-ups of problem spots where drug dealers and users were active, and assisted in gating problem alleys. We have helped neighbors come together to address a problem in their block or area. We have a presence at the monthly Police Community Relations Meetings of both Eastern and Southeast Police Districts and turn in a summary monthly report of problems. There are some blocks in the neighborhood where we have no block representative. If you are interested in serving as a block rep or helping in some other way please call Carolyn 410-522-4991.

-Carolyn Boitnott.

BRRRRRRR! PROTECT YOUR PIPES! -A message from the Department of Public Works.

This has been an unseasonably warm winter - until now! Pipes and utility meters can freeze when the temperature remains below 25 degrees for extended periods of time. The Baltimore City Department of Public Works offers the following tips to help protect water lines during periods of cold weather: Let a thin stream of cold water run from a basement faucet. The stream should be a continuous flow, about the thickness of a pencil. This water can be caught in a bucket or pail to be recycled later as laundry or dish water. If your pipe is frozen, gently warm it with hot air from a blow dryer at the point where it enters your house. Be sure you know the location of the water shutoff valve in your home. Check it periodically to ensure it works properly. Periodically monitor your sump pump. A frozen drain pipe could result in a flooded basement. Insulate pipes in unheated parts of your house. Be especially alert if you have had frozen pipes in the past. Keep bottled water on hand.

The Department of Public Works maintains outdoor water lines up to and including the meter. Water lines running from the meter to the house, as well as internal plumbing, are the responsibility of the property owner. For water emergencies in Baltimore City, call 311. If you are outside the City, but in our service area, please call 410-396-5352.
