January 2010
A Google search for “Good Bye in many languages” came back with 450 versions, so I guess I’ll just say So Long once (did I hear a collective sigh of relief?). For the past two years a terrific Executive Committee and I have done our best to make Butchers Hill a better place to live. I think we’ve had a few successes but, most important, we cared enough about Butchers Hill to work hard at it. Now it’s time for some new ideas, renewed energy, and different perspectives. The slate for 2010 appears to be top notch and I’m sure will continue the 30+ year tradition of excellence.
I would also like to thank all the committee chairs and members for their efforts. To a person, they accepted their responsibilities in a tireless fashion thereby making my job much easier. Finally, to all of you who regularly come to meetings, clean in front of your houses, participate in the house tour, flip hamburgers at the Flea Market, and a myriad of other contributions, Thank You! To the rest of you, only positive things result from getting involved with your neighborhood.
Our January meeting will feature two of our most popular guests - State Senator George Della and City Councilman Jim Kraft. Between them they will give us an idea of what to expect in 2010 at both the City and State levels. This will be George’s 27th year as a senator and he can always be counted on for insight into the goings on in Annapolis and a no holds barred presentation. Jim has represented our district since 2004 with public safety, sustainability and smart growth being his main focus. I promise you an entertaining and informative meeting.
The January meeting is when we vote for our new officers, so be sure to come to see who our leaders will be for the next year.
Now that I’ll have a little time on my hands, I’ve decided that being a Big Brother is one of the best ways to utilize my free time. I would like a few fellow volunteers from Butchers Hill to join me in this endeavor. The Big Brothers/ Big Sister’s organization is a well planned program in which I believe I can make a real difference in a young person’s life. Please give me a call for more information.
See ya round the ‘hood........ -Barry Glassman

SNOW EMERGENCY ROUTE – WHAT IS IT?
If you usually park on Baltimore, Lombard, Pratt, Washington Streets, or Patterson Park Avenue – you need to stay alert about which SNOW EMERGENCY PHASE Baltimore City is calling during snow storms.
Phase 1 - Requires that vehicles have snow tires, all weather radials or chains. Police citations are issued to those without
Phase 2 - Citizens should park off of the snow emergency routes before phase 2 of the snow emergency plan is activated. Phase 2 requires that vehicles have snow tires, all weather radials or chains. (Police citations are issued to those without) AND parking is prohibited on designated Snow Emergency Routes. Snow emergency routes are clearly marked and vehicles parked along these designated roadways during a snow emergency will be ticketed and towed. Vehicles are impounded if they are parked along the restricted peak hour zones in the downtown area. In neighborhoods, they are relocated to suggested alternative parking areas such as schools or recreational facilities.
Phase 3 - Permits emergency vehicles only on City streets.
SNOW REMOVAL REQUIRED BY LAW
Snow must be cleared within 3 hours after it has stopped falling. If it has stopped falling between 3pm and 6am, then it must be cleared before 11am. If your home faces north, your sidewalk will not be melted by the sun as long as the temperature is 32 degrees or colder, and may turn to ice – CAUSING PEDESTRIAN HAZARD, for which the owner is responsible. Be smart and clear your walk early!
Happy 2010 …continued from page 1
from January to December, no matter when you join. The price of membership has not changed in at least 15 years. As everyone knows the cost of doing business in the last 15 years has dramatically increased. We need your membership!
So fill out the membership form in this newsletter today (see page 4) and mail it in or drop it off at the meeting. Remember, too, that the Association is a 501(c)(3) organization that can accept your tax-deductible contributions for community improvement.
Income from membership dues has not quite supported the cost of Butchers Hill's most important outreach program-the monthly Newsletter. Written, composed, and distributed by BHA volunteers, the Newsletter's only out-of-pocket cost is for printing. Our policy is to distribute it to each household in the neighborhood, not just to each street address, and some 1500 copies are delivered each month. The Newsletter is also posted on our volunteer-maintained web site www.butchershill.org an equally important part of our community outreach.
Your membership is important to the Association, but so is your time and talent. Our neighborhood is known for doing, and that reputation has been earned not by a small cadre of insiders or old-timers, but by a continual infusion of concerned, talented neighbors, many of them relative newcomers to Butchers Hill. BHA's standing Committees (listed each month in the Newsletter) welcome any BHA member and always need volunteers, as do activities like Citizens On Patrol (C.O.P.), our annual House and Garden Tours, neighborhood clean-ups, and tree plantings. Whatever gets done gets done by volunteers, and the more you participate, the more we'll accomplish - together!
